Textile and Apparel Industry has been viewed as an engine of growth in most economies of the world. It is in this context that Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, set up the National institute of Fashion Technology in 1986 as a Registered Society with the status of an Autonomous Body. The prime objective of this institute is to assist the apparel/fashion industry in meeting the industrial competitiveness on a global plane. Over the years NIFT has created a learning environment that encourages innovation, creativity and excellence. The opening of NIFT centres at Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Gandhinagar, Chennai and Bangalore has contributed to the spread of fashion cult in the 1990's. Fashion is being looked upon as a professional career. |

| Globally Relevant Curricula | ||
The curricula have been planned and structured to meet the needs and concerns of the industry. Though many of these were originally patterned after courses abroad in view of the MOU with Fashion Institute of Technology, New York and Nottingham Trent University, U.K., they have been recast in the Indian ethos. The multidisciplinary curricular delivers a skill oriented, broad based education integrating it with IT and modern industry practices. Seminars, workshops, technology demonstrations, trade fairs, guest lectures, internships and projects firmly root the student to the real world. Students also have the opportunity to work with the faculty on consultants projects, thereby gaining valuable experience.

Teaching Methodology | ||
The core elements of NIFT'S teaching methodology are theory, demonstration and practice. The stress is on learning by doing. Students undertake classroom and workshop assignments, conduct field observations, make presentations and participate in the group discussions and seminars. The lecture mode of teaching is supplemented by the latest audiovisual and IT aids
Evaluation | ||
There is a system of continuous assessment. Students are evaluated by way of assignments, projects, internships and presentations which are held throughout the semester/trimester. Written exams are held in the middle and at end of the term. Juries comprising academicians and industry professionals judge a student's work. The aim is to closely monitor a student's evolution as a professional.

Common Examination Board (CEB)
Keeping in with its pioneering tradition, NIFT has introduced a common exam for all its seven Centres. The objective is to standardize the course content, delivery and assessment criteria and promote excellence across the Centres.
| Faculty | ||
The faculty brings to the classrooms professional qualifications, advanced training in world reputed fashion institutes, international exposure and years of hands-on industry experience. Committed to grow in their profession, they constantly enhance their knowledge base and skills through sustained interaction with industry.
| Resources | ||
The Institute is equipped with the infrastructure to make for a complete learning experience. There are classrooms and labs for jewellery, leather goods, fashion design, textiles, leather garments, knitwear, garment manufacturing, management studies and information technology.
